Aberdeen ChemSoc brings together science students from across the Highlands and beyond

The University of Aberdeen Chemistry Society (ChemSoc) is the northernmost university chemistry society in the UK and one of the largest and longest-running societies within the School of Natural & Computing Sciences.

Registered annually with the Royal Society of Chemistry, we are an inclusive and diverse community open to all students with an interest in chemistry or related STEM subjects.

Our mission is to connect students across disciplines through academic, professional, and social events that inspire collaboration and curiosity.

Recent Projects

One of our most exciting recent projects is our upcoming joint trip to Frankfurt, Germany, in collaboration with the Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Physics Societies.

The trip will include a visit to BASF, one of the world’s leading chemical companies, offering students a first-hand look at industrial chemistry and engineering in action.

We also continue to focus on bringing like-minded students together outside of academics providing opportunities to take a break from studying, socialise, and build a supportive community within the School of Natural & Computing Sciences.

A Bit About Us

Scotland’s Northernmost Chemistry Society As the UK’s most northerly university chemistry society, Aberdeen ChemSoc brings together science students from across the Highlands and beyond.

Global STEM Collaboration Their 2025 trip to Frankfurt includes a tour of BASF, one of the world’s largest chemical producers, giving students unique international industry exposure.

Annual ChemSoc Ceilidh Tradition One of the society’s most anticipated events is the ChemSoc Ceilidh — a Scottish-style celebration mixing music, dancing, and community spirit.

Tea Club & Wellbeing Focus Beyond academics, ChemSoc’s weekly Tea Club provides an informal space for students to de-stress, build friendships, and foster inclusion across STEM disciplines.

Events

ChemSoc runs a wide variety of events throughout the academic year that cater to both academic and social interests.

These include guest lectures, career talks, and networking evenings with industry professionals and alumni, as well as casual socials like our weekly Tea Club, pub quizzes, and movie nights. One of our annual highlights is the ChemSoc Ceilidh, which brings together students and staff to celebrate in true Scottish style.

We also organise external trips and collaborative events with other societies to foster interdisciplinary connections and hands-on experiences beyond the classroom.

Join Us

Our committee is made up of enthusiastic students from across year groups who help organise events, manage communications, and represent the society within the wider university community. Positions include President, Treasurer, Secretary and Events Coordinator, among others. Committee roles are open to all members and are filled through annual elections held at our AGM near the end of the academic year. Students interested in getting more involved can also join our planning subgroups or volunteer at events throughout the year to gain experience before running for a role.
