We are MathSoc!

We are the University of Birmingham’s official student-led Mathematics Society, and with over 300 active members, we’re one of the university’s most active academic societies. While we’re based in the Mathematics department, our events consistently attract a wider audience from across the university, in particular students interested in problem-solving, data, finance, tech and analytical careers.

Recent Projects

This October we held our first ever ‘MathSoc Careers Month’, a programme of events designed to help students prepare for the world of work. Across October, we delivered 4 in-person, student/alumni-led workshops on CVs, internships, graduate schemes, and placements, and ended the month with our first Careers Fair since 2022.

The aims of the month were to:
- Give students a framework in which to approach application season
- Give students practical and experience-driven insights into the world of work
- Offer companies a chance to engage directly with our members
- Strengthen links between employers, the Maths department, and the university’s own Careers Network

This year, we continued to run our MathSoc Family Scheme, the largest of its kind among all academic societies at the University, with over 200 first-year students taking part. The scheme places groups of 10–15 first-year students (‘children’) with 2–3 second- or third-year mentors (parents). These families create an immediate support network for new students, giving them a welcoming space to ask for advice, navigate the transition to university life, and make friends with peers in their year group. We successfully ran more than 15 families this year, up from 10 last year, demonstrating both the growing popularity of the scheme and the vital role it plays in shaping our members’ university experience.
