Durham University Chemistry Society
University of Durham
Our students study all things chemistry-related! Pure chemistry, biochemistry and natural sciences, alongside dual-honours programs, are the most studied degrees of our members.

Grab your lab coats and join one of Durham's largest academic societies!
We are the Durham University Chemistry Society – or ChemSoc for short. We’re an academic society that supports predominantly chemistry, biochemistry and natural sciences students across the university, from first years to PhDs. We aim to create a community-like environment for our students, with support and inclusivity at the forefront of everything we do.
Recent Projects
We have been running weekly workshops for the first-year undergraduate students, giving advice that we would have wanted back when we began our degrees.
In partnership with employers, we are organising career events and seminars to aid students in finding the job for them. We also plan on holding revision sessions at key times throughout the year and the planning of our society merchandise (Stash) drops are underway
A Bit About Us
Founded to Foster Chemistry Community Durham University ChemSoc has been active for decades, providing a platform for chemistry students to connect academically and socially, promoting collaboration between undergraduates, postgraduates, and staff.
STEM Outreach and Inclusion The society regularly collaborates with local schools and charities to inspire young students in STEM and promote diversity within the field of chemistry.
Academic Support Network ChemSoc runs weekly workshops and peer-led revision sessions, helping first-year and senior students succeed in challenging chemistry modules and lab work.
Signature Event: The Chemistry Ball The annual Chemistry Charity Ball is one of the university’s most anticipated social events, combining celebration with fundraising for important causes such as Parkinson’s research and local science initiatives.
Events
Our social secretaries run biweekly evening socials; targeted at and accessible for both drinking and non-drinking students. We work alongside other DU societies to hold larger events such as our well-attended Parkinsons Pals Charity Pub Quiz, organised with the DU Physics and Biology Societies.
We celebrate the end of the academic year (and exams) with the Chemistry Charity Ball, our largest event of the year and a fundraiser for a worthy cause.
